New cause needed

Now it's late Autumn and some of us are still recovering from wounds inflcited by our last challenge; we have been talking about attempting a new chanllenge next year.

So far the Heart Foundation, the Stroke Association and Diabetes seem to be the winning ideas - if anyone else has any ideas please contact us.

Finally; although we have a few ideas we would like to do next year (none include excess walking!) if anyone has an idea for us we'd be pleased to thin k about it - just drop us a line!

A huge Thank you!

On behalf of all the Penair Oldies, I would like to thank the following people - all the Oldies (Neil, John, Steve and myself) The Lander Oldies (Joseph and Chris) all the wifes (Ruth, Cass', Marcia) and all the children (Chris, Lucy, Dominic, Keiran, Riley and Daisy). Plus all our parents and friends who have helped and everyone who have sponsored us over the last few months. Without your support (and patience) the walk would have ground to a halt weeks ago! A huge thank you from all of us!
We're collecting money now - so hopefully will have a total for you all in a month or so. At the moment our estimates of total raised will be between £500 - £600 - brilliant!
Finally, in about 4 - 6 months time I aim to have a book available to buy - no title at this stage - but will get back to you. A percentage of money raised from the book will go to Joseph for his fund raising.
Thanks again everyone!

One down...

Well that's that. Seen the Dr this morning - I have sprained my achilles tendon in my right leg and told to rest it for 1-2 weeks; thus I'm out of the Walk. The walk goes on with Steve and Joseph resuming today with Neil and John joining them on Thursday

Nursing wounds

Hi - Clive reporting this one.
Temporary halt while we nurse wounds. For myself I've had crippling leg cramps that have left me hobbling plus I'm evidently quite dehydrated (probable cause of the cramps).
We've returned home tonight for proper rest; Steve and Joe are planing to resume the walk tomorrow; albeit in a simplier way - will keep you updated on this.
I will rejoin the walk on Thursday or if I can walk properly again sooner - John and Neil (the other Oldies) are aware of the changes.
Will update this page tomorrow with fresh photos and on Facebook

Saturday 21 August 2010

Bissoe Valley revisited

Another day, another training walk! This time we managed to get four of us together at the same time. Chris, Joe, Steve and Clive walked around the Bissoe Valley (where Clive and Steve's first training walk was way back in the spring).
We managed to iron out a few issues with the rucksacks but they're still heavy! New boots didn't cause blisters (yet). Water remains a concern but we'll manage somehow!

They have done a really good article about our challenge

Well done Clive!!

Sunday 8 August 2010

Sunday 8th August Looe Bar near Helston
Practice walk with full kit for Clive and Chris (with Lucy adding as back-up!) Carrying way too much weight (and that's just across the waist!) - will have to figure out a way of reducing the weight; guess may have to leave the fridge at home after all.......!

Monday 2 August 2010

Good news!

Have been in contact with a West Briton reporter Josie Purcell who is planning to do a pre-walk story followed up but a piece once we have completed the walk.

On behalf of the Oldies, I would like to thank Josie for her support and hope the picture they print showes my good side!

Penair School - good to their word!

Penair (via their Dep Head Jill Longden) have come up trumps! A sizable donation was recieved with school ties and numerous badges!

Obviously we're please as punch to be associated with the school even after all this time (25 years since we left this year!).

Thanks again Penair School!

Injury worries!

Injury worries!

On a training walk into work Clive sprained his left ankle at Newmills Ford. Now tightly bandaged and advised to rest hopefully shouldn't be a problem for our walk in just 7 weeks time!

Please keep encouraging others to sponser us; we're doing well but to steal a quote from a well-kown Supermarket - "Every little helps!"

Coast 2 Coast Challenge

Joseph has been raising money to fund his WSJ experiance, he has recently completed a walk from Par on the South Coast to Port Issac On the North Coast, this is around 32 - 35 miles.

The group decided to complete the walk, whilst taking a wheel barrow with them.

Rachael Curtis comes up trumps!

Rachael Curtis presents Steve with a sizable donation to our cause outside of her Florist in Tresillian. A very generous gift on behalf of all the Oldies (despite her not liking the name - says it ages her as well) a huge Thank You!

Penair Oldies - Bodmin Moor - crossing a fence in style!

In crossing Bodmin Moor, we took the odd wrong turning. I course (with style and grace) showed the others how to cross a fence (with rusty barbed wire) carefully.

Like a Mountain Lion I'm sure you would all agree!

The Fifth Oldie breaks radio silence!

We've finally made contact with Simon "Min" Nicholls - the fifth Oldie! After a long period of radio silence he's surfaced at last! Although computer illiterate (his admission) so he won't see this update, it's good to hear from him again. Hopefully he'll join us on later updates

Four Tor Trek - Training accross Bodmin Moor

The four Oldies embarked on the hardest training to date, walking accross Bodmin Moor from Rough Tor to Tolborough Tor, including Brown Willy and Cathole Downs on the way.

After many miles (and much sun burn) we made the 10 - 12 miles miles in about 4 - 5 hours; not bad going for a bunch of old farts!

Wednesday 2 June 2010

Honoury Oldie finally starts his training!

Honourary Oldie Chris finally starts his training! It took a lot of encouraging but I finally got Chris out of the house and do a 6 mile walk yesterday!

Definite sponsership and four tor trek

Definite sponsership and four tor trek

First, thanks again to Rachael for her offer of sponsership; her offer was gladly accepted this morning and hopefully we'll try and do some publicity photos

Secondly, on Saturday 6th June Clive, Steve, John and Neil will be walking Four Tors across Bodmin Moor. Starting from Jamaica Inn near the A30 we'll be walking over to Rough Tor near Camelford as a warm up walk and to finalise plans - if you're in the area give us a wave!

New Walkers!

New walkers!

Two new walkers confirmed! My son Christopher Stocker will be joining us for the week and Steve's son Joseph Varker (who we're raising the cash for!) will also join us.

Aged 17 and 16 respectively, the boys will have to be honourary "Penair Oldies" for the walk not just because of their obvious ages but also because of their obvious disadvantage of going to Richard Lander School (the rival school to Penair) !!!

No matter, their questionable education aside they are more than welcome!

Coming soon, news of our fifth walker plus a very experienced walker recently in the press has also offered to join us for a couple of days - keep watching!

Any ideas and sponsers

Hi again everyone

Now we have started our training in earnest; we're looking for any advice from people who have done long extended walks before. We've planned most things but food and water is becoming a headache, as we'll be at least 4 days from home at the furthest points. Any tips on how to keep our costs down when it comes to food and drink?

Also, still looking for any sponsers. Thanks to Rachael Curtis Florist shop at Tresillian www.truroflorist.co.uk for becoming our latest sponser! If any other business' want to sponser us and have an advert placed on this site please contact us!

Monday 12 April 2010

New Starting Point!

Because of trouble with Ferry times from Plymouth Hoe to Cawsand and to complement another walkers recent walk from Dorest to Torpoint we have decided to begin our walk on the shore of the River Tamar at Torpoint.

The distance will remain the same (plus we won't have to pay the toll on the bridge or the ferry!)

2010 Challenge

This year our aging gang of lay-abouts are attempting to do something totally daft - but what the hell!

Steve's oldest son - Joseph - has been chosen to go to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden in July, 2011. Brilliant! But unfortunately it needs money!

So, Steve and Clive are currently enlisted (with John being unable to because of family commitments) into doing a 154 mile walk from the Hoe in Plymouth to Lands End on the most western tip of Cornwall.

Hopefully Neil will join us too and if anyone see's Min - tell him we've lost his contact details but he's invited too!

We aim to leave in late August 2010; walking for 6-8 days travelling the south Cornish Coast route (with a couple of diversions on the way!)

Any support will be gratefully received. Especially offers of sponsership and even advertising. If any companies want to help us we'll sell advertising space for sponsership!

So please follow this Blog; we'll update as often as possible and once the challenge starts we aim to update daily.

Welcome Bloggers!

Welcome to this Blog - dedicated to the exploits for four or five aging old fools who all met originally at Penair School in 1980

Neil Jones, Steve Varker, John Brinkhoff, Simon 'Min' Nicholls and Clive Stocker started Penair School in the September of 1980. Little did they know they would be friends almost 30 years later and over the course of this time have seen trips to France; various business' born; management and professional qualifications gained and between us 11 offspring (at the last count!)

We all come from totally different backgrounds and have travelled different life choices but one thing unites us all - the wish to generally take the mickey out of each other and to have a laugh on the few times we get to meet up each year.

We also travel the internet under another name - "the Old Buggers" - but for the latest challenge we've decided to become more media friendly - this the phrase "Penair Oldies" has been adopted - but we'll still answer to the former title!

Please follow us on this blog and support us in any way possible. In the next Blog I'll tell you what the latest 'Penair Oldies' challenge is!
